Sunset bonfire at stearns park lakeshore
If you’re in Ludington, consider joining the Sunset Bonfire at Stearns Park Lakeshore on the fourth Thursday of every month. The event is free and includes live music. It takes place on the south end of Stearns Park Beach from 8 to 10 p.m. The Ludington Fire Department builds the fire pits and monitors them to prevent them from spreading.
The evening kicks off with a concert from Eric Engblade, a talented multi-instrumentalist and master songwriter. Engblade’s songs combine accessibility and depth, making them perfect for summer evenings by the lake. Other performers include the RetroVibe Band from Grand Haven, a group of highly-experienced musicians who play eclectic music ranging from classic rock and blues to R&B Soul and British Invasion. Accessible walkway
Ludington, Michigan, is the place to be if you’re in need of an accessible beach. Stearns Park Lakeshore is a nearly half-mile-long golden sand beach with three accessible walkways, the longest of which is the fifth most-accessible in the nation. Besides the beach, the park also has several playgrounds and shuffleboard courts for the little ones, restrooms, free WiFi, and ample parking.
The park is a popular tourist destination, but there’s no ADA-compliant path for wheelchair users to use. The county’s parks department recently closed the swimming quarries at Quarry Park, but they plan to expand the park’s hours once more development takes place. Until then, however, the lakeshore is wheelchair-accessible. There’s also a seasonally accessible walkway along the lakeshore.
The walkway is not without its problems. Sometimes sand will blow over the cement, but the walkway itself is in good shape. Long Beach has been working with Disability Connections of West Michigan to make the area more accessible. In honor of Richard W. Stearns, the city is establishing an accessible pathway along the lakeshore. While it’s hard to see the end result of this work, it’s well worth the effort.
